Black Christmas film assessment

Black Christmas film assessmentThis festive fright-fest was a good surprise from what I was initially expecting. This is one more horror remake (from the men and women behind ‘Final Location’ – nice movie), but un-such as so quite a few other individuals; it did handle to come up trumps; this kind of as ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.’ This is a remake of Bob Clarke’s 1974 classic slasher film, ‘Black Christmas’; which essentially came 4 many years in advance of John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’. Some fans lay claim that it was the original slasher flick.

From the outdoors, this appears including just one more of your fundamental ‘there’s a psycho hacking up a bunch of fairly girls, who are operating up the stairs rather of out of the door,’ and to a particular extent that’s right, it’s the way this is conveyed which is fascinating and enticing to view.

The story: crazed killer, Billy Lenz, escapes his psychiatric ward and is determined to make it to his childhood residence, in which he was abused, through Christmas. Dilemma is, it’s many years later and the household is now a Sorority house. It’s Christmas Eve and a who’s who of teen/horror girl stars are there to welcome him, which includes Melissa (Michelle Trachtenberg , ‘Buffy the vampire slayer’ fame), Heather (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, ‘Final Location three’), Dana (Lacey Chabert, ‘Mean Girls’) and Kelli (Katie Cassidy, ‘When a stranger calls’ remake.)

This film is in fact fairly nice, it has a consistent feeling of currently being watched that runs right via it and adds a sparkle to the scares, and the tension is kept substantial. The actresses, even though spouting some awful lines at occasions, also say some nice ones. The acting is great, and since most of the top ladies are stars, and most of them horror stars, the audience doesn’t guess which 1 is going to make it to the rolling credits. The story-line builds properly, and there is a mounting tension, as the killer 1st phones the girls, and then begins to do away with them.

A related storyline to the original ‘Halloween’, with a killer coming residence for the holidays, there are also a lot of comparable P.O.V shots of the killer, watching the girls during the house. The Christmas theme bleeds in properly with the plot, and it comes across in spots (primarily, the flash-backs to Billy Lenz’s childhood) such as anything, director, Tim Burton, would dream up. The movie gets darker and darker as we move via it, with some pretty violent scenes, and the music by way of Shirley Walker is good; capturing horror and Christmas all in one particular twisted melody. Also, the use of red and green lighting all through (owed to Christmas) is pretty cool, and produces a good atmosphere.

Due to it staying set in a Sorority house, and this no longer getting 1974, some of the dialogue just doesn’t cut it. I can’t picture a lot of of these girls’ becoming in the house with a crazed serial killer, just due to the fact they can’t uncover their ‘sorority sister,’ believable in 2007 – sad, but genuine. There is, however, the obligatory shower scene, but it’s used for scares, not thrills, and so functions.

Right from the get started you can inform, this isn’t your typical run of the mill slasher, it in fact has a back story, and we do come across ourselves caring for some of the characters, for illustration, Kelli, played through Katie Cassidy is nice; plus if you hated ‘Dawn’ in ‘Buffy the vampire slayer’ – you are gonna adore this film.
